From student to intern: a list of discoveries from working full-time hours

Hydration is key

I’ve always known hydration was important and I have felt the consequences being dehydrated takes on my body.  However, it was recently that I realized how much staying hydrated affects my mood, not just my body.  I now own a larger water bottle that I only have to fill up once a day and I try to drink almost the full thing every day.  It helps me keep track of my intake throughout my busy day.  Although it is not difficult to maintain that through the week, I noticed I tend to forget about drinking water on the weekends when I’m working retail and at home.  That is something I have been focusing on too.

Contacting others whose business hours are the same as your work hours.

Until you start working 9-5 every day, you don’t realize how difficult it is to make appointments or call other businesses.  I have now made use of many contact forms from business websites.  Email is a great tool.

Knowing how you work.

When you are at a work for a majority of the day, it is important to know yourself and how you work best.  Knowing how you learn, the best way you receive feedback, what helps you pay attention and stay focused.  Knowing your own personal tendencies will allow for a more productive work day.

Non-work time.

Take advantage of time when you don’t have to think about work/internship, whatever you spend most of your day focusing on.  Our brains need breaks and variety.  Whether that be watching a show, painting, going for walks, hanging with a friend.  It’s hard to turn your brain away from what you are constantly worrying and thinking about, but it is such a nice and much needed reprieve.

Celebrating small wins.

Sometimes we spend such a long time worrying about things we have to get done, things that need fixed or improved.  We forget about the things that do go right.  So take a moment to appreciate and celebrate the things that went well.  Documentation got done for the day.  Maybe a session didn’t go as planned, but the one after went really well.  Appreciate the small things.

The biggest things I’ve learned is to just continue on.  Be kind, keep going, keep progressing, and keep taking care of yourself.  That’s all anyone can ask for.
